About the author

Author Betsy Flak has always treasured compelling stories. As a child, she spent her free time lost in a book, whether upside down in a cozy armchair, in the bow of her family's fishing boat in Michigan, or on a bleacher during her brother's basketball games. As an adult, her ereader is her most trusted companion and almost never leaves her side, prepared for any spare moment.

This love, or obsession, depending on the perspective, led her to declare her intentions of becoming an author at the ripe age of ten. After a few years of writing fantastical short stories, she accidentally took a brief fifteen-year hiatus to become an engineer. However, she never stopped creating her own unique adventures, filled with supernatural abilities, heart-stopping action, the battle between good and evil, and, of course, romantic interests galore. When her husband was offered his dream job in Los Angeles, she took a leap of faith, trading her career as a biomedical engineer for one as an independent writer. She would like to claim she's never looked back, but that would be a lie. It was the hardest decision of her life and, at first, even harder to stick with.

Now, when she's not writing, editing, or reading, you can find her out on the flat track playing roller derby or curled up on a couch with her favorite purple blanket, husband, and two dogs.

Did You Read His Story? The Darkness of Love #ASMSG

In all the excitement of preparing to release book 4 in the Redcliffe novels series, it seems I have neglected a couple of my older stories. Have you read The Darkness of Love yet? This Victorian vampire romance is not what you would expect, as my reviewers have reliably informed me. It tells the story of the vampire Marcus Scott who we meet in Redcliffe, Cornwall. He was a mere stablehand on an English country estate before he became immortal…

The Darkness of Love available from Chances Press

Read his story, and catch up with one of his later adventures in Christmas With the Vampires. I will be back on Monday to reveal the cover for my brand new upcoming novel, Eye of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel).

Coming Soon: Eye of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel) #ASMSG

I am very pleased to announce that book 4 in the Redcliffe novels series will be published this summer. Yes, Eye of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel) is finally finished. I have been working on this baby since 2013, although I’m sure you will understand the delay when I tell you that my youngest child is three years old…

Nevertheless, I persevered amidst the chaos of breastfeeding, nappy changing, and everything else that babies and toddlers need. I also worked on a few other novels in the interim, when new ideas presented themselves and new characters were born. Well, you will see the cover reveal for Eye of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel) very soon. In the meantime, if you haven’t read the first three novels in the series, you had better get reading!

I Write for Manchester #ASMSG

I am in shock. Not my Manchester. Not my city. No, not those poor, innocent, decent families. Yes, it happened. The terrorist finally got in. All it took was one lost soul intent on wreaking devastation. We cannot comprehend a person that commits these atrocities. All we can do is pick up the pieces and move on. Manchester is strong. Manchester is resilient. Manchester never gives up.

Manchester is my Muse. I lived and worked in the city for several years. My husband studied at university. We frequented student pubs and nightclubs, the city centre shops, museums, and even the hospitals. Indeed, I am still a regular outpatient at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, which provided lots of writing inspiration during its transition from Gothic, old buildings to a smart new medical hub.

This week I grieve for those who died. I didn’t know them personally, but it doesn’t matter. I know the MEN arena (that is the name I know it by). I have been to concerts there in the past. I may consider taking my own children to concerts in the future, although right now it is the last thing I would do. Earlier that day, on Monday, I sent out a manuscript to a publisher for consideration. The novel is called Hunting the Hunted. It is about a vampire in Manchester city centre, and what happens when the hunters come for him. There are more Manchester vampire hunter stories in progress. My Muse has spoken. Manchester has spoken. My Manchester.

Rethink Your Book Publishing

Since my first novel was published six years ago, there have been lots of changes in the book publishing industry. Back then I tried very hard to find an agent that could represent me and help me achieve my dream of fame and fortune. It has not materialized yet, but I have learned a lot about our industry, and the many facets that make up book publishing.

There is no “right way” to get published. Anybody can publish a book at the click of a mouse or the tap of a screen. Getting published is the easy part. Building your audience, and finding new readers, that is the challenge. And it is one that I am still learning about. I took time out to participate in a training course and it taught me a lot about self-publishing.

One thing I learned is that I would rather not self publish from scratch. I am very fortunate to have a good friend who is a professional photographer, and she designed the cover for my new novel, Eye of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel), which I am very happy with. I have agreed to return to my original publisher, Mirador, who will help with the book formatting, distribution, and all the technical knowledge that is required. That leaves me free to continue doing what I do best: writing the darn books!

Spiritual Writing

I am currently experiencing a lot of reiki healing as I study for my 2nd Degree Okuden accreditation. Part of my work involves recording the results of my healing sessions both on myself, and on other people. I find it very therapeutic to write down my feelings, and have kept diaries and journals throughout my life. These will be a useful resource when I decide that the time is right to collect my scribblings and publish a series of non-fiction books covering my spiritual journey, my experiences with reiki energy healing, and my life as the pagan housewife. It is interesting to see how far I have come, when I was only ever going to write just 1 novel all those years ago…. Where will it end? Nobody knows!

💕✶ EXCERT ✶💕
“I still need to speak with you,” he said, leaning across me to get a spoonful of coffee.
“Yes.”
“The sooner the better, Miss Love.”
I was hypnotised by his presence, with thoughts from last night troubling me.
“Nice view.”
I instantly pulled the material together. He reached across me as I noticed his Rolex Daytona in gold with a black leather strap watch.
“My office, Miss Love,” he said, moving around me for the hot water, and then poured a little milk in his mug, feeling his breath on my face.
“Of course,” my voice broke, so small, if he heard me.
I heard him inhale a deep breath, taking in my fruity aroma. “Cerruti 1881, by Nino Cerruti, I believe?”
“Yes, yes, it is,” I said, appreciating the fact he knew my fragrance.
“The fresh, floral scent for such an incredible young woman, excellent choice.”
I became lost in his entrapment of seduction, closing my eyes.
“My office, Miss Love,” he reminded me, losing all sense of anything, lost in his words, lost in his closeness.
“Shit.” My mind and body went mental for him, eager to just reach out and have him…explore him, rip away that suit and bare all, have our nude bodies pressed erotically together.
I hadn’t noticed he’d left my side, too lost drowning in him, the boss.
“Flipping heck, Destiny, stop it.” I turned, looking at the office door, aware he was behind it, waiting no doubt for me to go in and listen to whatever else he had to say.
Come on, Destiny, get it over and done with.
Standing at his office door, I sucked in a deep breath and moved my hair from my face that had fallen loose. I knocked, anxiously.
“Enter,” his voice ordered.
I stepped in with severe knots in my tummy. I grinned.
“Mr. Wright.”
“Please shut the door,” he informed me, sitting behind his desk, and leaned back staring at me, watching my every move.

#MHAW17 Writing as Therapy

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and today I share a brief message about how I use writing as therapy. All my life I felt odd, alone, always on the outside looking in. Now, I come from a close-knit family, I was loved and supported as a child, and that continued into adulthood. I always had friends. I was never the popular girl at school. I was the geek. I was bullied. But I always knew that I was different, and that I just had to find my place, whatever that may be.

Writing has been my constant source of therapy and support. Throughout my teenage years, I kept diaries of my daily activities. Some of those entries might only have been a couple of sentences scribbled down before I went to bed. But I did them, because I knew that they helped. I still have those diaries, and perhaps one day I will incorporate them into a memoir.

My spiritual journey has progressed hugely during the past ten years or so. I am now completing my training in Reiki 2nd Degree, Okuden. This Japanese energy healing system has brought about great transformation in me as a person, both emotionally and spiritually. Now I plan to share that with my family and friends, and maybe out into the wider world. I will continue to document my experiences, and I would be honoured if you will join me on the journey. Feel free to share your mental health stories. We all have a story. Be proud.

Inspired to Write

My spiritual journey is picking up the pace again this year, and along with it is my determination to write more. Since I began my reiki training, I have taken time to work on self-care, meditation, energy clearing, and a lot more that I will elaborate on in due time.

You see, I now feel that the time is right for me to explore the avenue of non-fiction publishing. Up to now I have only published fictional novels and short stories, and all my non-fiction work has been online in blogs and on information websites. Well, I am currently collecting material for my #365DaysofTarot challenge. That will be the first non-fiction book I write. But after that, who knows? Perhaps a memoir of the pagan housewife… everyday reiki in a Western household… meditation and mindfulness for busy parents… the possibilities are growing all the time. Speak to you later. I have some writing to do!

Let’s Get This Sorted! #15kinMay #amwriting

I decided to look back at some old blog posts and see if I could glean a little inspiration and motivation to move forward from my current writing slump. I had forgotten all about my participation in the #15kinMay challenge back in 2013. It looks as though this was a short-lived social media trend, but I think it would be a good opportunity to get myself back in gear again this month.

What I want to do is finish the first draft of my current WIP, which is book 5 in the Redcliffe novels series. That will probably take around 15000 words, so this is a great opportunity to get myself up to date. How do you fix a problem when your writing slows down? I know the cause of my problems, and am working towards releasing those blocks and freeing my time a bit more. It is all a work in progress.

Losing My Way #amwriting

I have lost my way a little bit during the past month. All it took was a long school holiday and a bit of family drama, and suddenly here I am stuck in limbo once again. I haven’t opened my WIP for a couple of weeks. I haven’t written anything proper for ages. Well, I say proper. I have been maintaining two blogs and posting regular articles on those, so I suppose really I’m not that bad.

What I mean is that my previous work has stalled. I need to produce a new book to publish, and I want to have it done and ready by the end of June so that I can release it just before the school summer holidays. That way I can take a bit of time to do promotions and networking to give it a decent chance of getting off the ground. But I also need a bit more freelance paid work coming in, so I must reboot my efforts in the non-fiction department as well. Looks like May will be a busy month!

Witchcraft on the #AtoZChallenge for #ThrowbackThursday

April has flown by in a whirlwind of chaos and drama, and today I look back to my entry for the #AtoZChallenge in 2015. I wrote about witchcraft and its connection to my Redcliffe novels series set in Cornwall, England. My heroine, Jessica Stone, believed herself to be a very average human being at the beginning of my debut novel. Events turned quickly, and she soon found that her friends were not as human as she believed, and her new boyfriend was a whole different species… Have you read Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel)?
