Are you feeling festive already? Here's a sneaky snippet from my short story Christmas with the Vampires:
Excerpt
Marcus cut a striking figure in his dark red
velvet frock coat, jaunty black silk top hat, and impeccable tailored
suit. The rough corduroy trousers, linen
shirt and leather waistcoat of his human days were long forgotten, although he
had kept his old work clothes as a reminder of his youth. The man did not look a day over twenty five
in age, but then his physical body was frozen in time due to his vampire genetics. His eyes alone betrayed the experience of his
age, and many unsuspecting humans were left mystified when they tried to talk
down to Marcus Scott only to be politely rebuffed when he demonstrated his
knowledge and expertise in the matter at hand. He rarely lost his temper, but when he did he was a force to be reckoned
with, vampire or not.

Our favourite bad-boy vampire, Marcus Scott,
meets an old friend for Christmas in Edwardian London.
With his blond hair, ice blue eyes and
sculpted physique, Marcus Scott immediately turns the heads of everyone he
encounters upon his arrival in London at Christmas time. Unbeknownst to all the
women and men who fall under his spell with just one glance, Marcus is a
vampire with a desperate need to feed from the young and the beautiful. When he
unexpectedly encounters Lady Amelia Richmond, the vampire instrumental in his
own transition, the two begin to plan a holiday feast to satisfy their deep
hunger.
Are you looking for the best #BlackFriday
deals this year? It seems more important now because of the pandemic, with lots
of non-essential shops still recovering from lockdowns and restrictions here in
England. These shops have had to increase their efforts to sell more products
online, competing with big brands and established internet stores. I have mixed
feelings. On the one hand, I believe in not over-commercializing holidays such
as Christmas. However, I sell books for a living. If I don’t sell the books I
write, I won’t make any money, and that could negatively affect my children and
husband.
I propose a compromise: think about the small business owners, including indie authors, craft businesses, local produce etc. They rely
on income from the sales of the stock that they lovingly create by hand. We
should support those businesses. When I hear about #BlackFriday, my thoughts turn to Amazon. Well, they are made up of small business
owners, like me, who rely on royalties paid via Amazon for the sales of our
books. Amazon is not necessarily the big bad giant that some people believe. Most
of the books published on Amazon will pay decent royalties to their authors,
myself included. Check the names of the sellers when you shop, and you will
find some small, independent retailers.
Why not search for alternative Christmas gifts
for your friends and family? Find them a book written and produced
independently by a local author. Try a CD or buy tickets to see a local musician.
Or even search for some handcrafted bespoke trinkets, jewellery, furniture or
bric-a-brac. The small business owners will be far more grateful for your custom
and will make more effort to give you the personal customer service that makes
you feel good about parting with your hard-earned cash. Thank you.

How do you feel about the #BlackFriday and

Yule Blessings, my friends! I am feeling very festive this week and
looking forward to Christmas Day and some time with family. Did you read my
festive horror story, Christmas with the Vampires?
I published it shortly after The Darkness of Love, because bad-boy
vampire Marcus Scott insisted that I write another story for him. Since I was
busy with babies at that time, I compromised and wrote him a short festive
story. Tell me what you think…

This year I am especially excited to celebrate
Christmas. We have had a challenging few years as a family, with several
dramatic events unfolding, and lots of health issues to deal with. While many
of these are ongoing, it seems that we are reaching a point where we can begin
to relax and know that everything is falling into place. We have had to adapt
to new habits, new experiences, and new people, but we keep going, and more
importantly, we stick together.
Christmas for me is about celebrating with family and
friends, catching up on lost time, taking a break from work, and enjoying a
chance to treat ourselves with good food, a few gifts, and a chance to party. For
me it is not religious. I mix it with my Winter Solstice celebrations in
keeping with my Celtic pagan heritage, but I grew up in a Christian family, so
old habits will prevail. We visit the local church for special services, and we
do enjoy Christingle. What does Christmas mean to you? Do you celebrate the
festival, or is it just another day?

In all the
excitement of preparing to release book 4 in the Redcliffe novels series, it
seems I have neglected a couple of my older stories. Have you read The
Darkness of Love yet? This Victorian vampire romance is not what you
would expect, as my reviewers have reliably informed me. It tells the story of
the vampire Marcus Scott who we meet in Redcliffe, Cornwall. He was a mere
stablehand on an English country estate before he became immortal…
Read his
story, and catch up with one of his later adventures in Christmas With the Vampires.
I will be back on Monday to reveal the cover for my brand new upcoming novel, Eye
of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel).

I make no
secret of the fact that I write adult novels. My children are only young, aged
6 and 3, and my eldest daughter is now of an age where she can read full
sentences. I realised that I must now take care of what I am writing when she
is in the room! I had a similar experience with our next-door neighbour a few
years ago, so have been fairly secretive since then. I usually write my novels
at night, when the children are in bed.
Anyway, I
took my daughters to our local Scribe
Festival recently. As a volunteer organiser, I took an active role in
preparation of the event, and on the day, I wanted my children to get involved
with the family activities. They loved it! I also wanted an author presence at
the event, so I took my display banner and a collection of books to showcase.
My banner has a vampire image on it, taken from the cover of my short story, Christmas with the Vampires. I thought nothing of it until my daughter studied
the image for a while, asked a few questions about what that red stuff in the
glass was, why was the lady lying down, and was the man a vampire? She began to
look a little frightened as I explained that it was from one of my stories.
Whoops!

I have
decided to take a break from writing for Christmas, since my time is largely
taken up with preparations and parental responsibilities. Who knew I could
become so busy once my children were in school? Well, technically my youngest
daughter is still only at preschool, so we are together for most of the week.
When I finish
the obligatory checking of emails, updating blog posts, and general home admin,
I have no time for writing. I am solely responsible for procuring and
wrapping Christmas presents, since my husband is a bit of a Scrooge and would
do it all on Christmas Eve if I left him in charge! My fifth
Redcliffe novel is still ticking over in my mind, however, so I
may have to sneak onto the computer at some point during the festivities just
to clear my head… Do you write through Christmas?

I am
currently reading a very powerful novel by C.C. Humphreys. Vlad – The Epic Novel of the Real
Dracula, is a completely enthralling, violent and disturbing story. I had
the paperback sitting in my “to be read” pile for a very long time, and I have
now been reading it for over a month. Usually I would devour a novel like this
within a couple of weeks, but family life, and writing, have intervened to
disrupt old habits.
Anyway, I am
still reading, and today I have been thinking about events in the novel while I
went about my daily business. Such is the nature of the story, and the quality
of writing, that it really has me gripped and desperate to continue reading. It
has evoked some very powerful emotional responses, since it is incredibly
violent and passionate. I felt compelled to share my reading journey at this
point, and to say that when I do finish reading Vlad, probably later this
week, I will need to read something light hearted and cheerful. I recommend the
novel, but be warned, it is extremely dark and dangerous!
Part of the reason for my distraction from reading is my participation
in #Blogmas over on my SpookyMrsGreen the Pagan Housewife
blog. Go and check it out if you are interested!
