Enjoy a Victorian Love Affair on Holiday

This summer isn’t turning out quite as we expected. Or maybe it is. Here in the UK we are “strongly advised” to stay local as much as possible and only take a holiday within our country. I am happy enough with the arrangement since I don’t crave anywhere exotic. I am just as happy on Blackpool beach as I would be anywhere else!

Perhaps you need some books for your summer reading selection. May I offer a suggestion or several? I know a rather cheeky, seductive vampire who loves attention, and you can find him in the Redcliffe novels series and in his own standalone novel and short story.

Have you met Marcus Scott? He is a millionaire playboy who first appears in Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), leaving a trail of chaos and confusion in his wake. He was never meant to be such a powerful character. But he is very persuasive, especially when he turns on the charm and fixes that icy blue gaze on me… *swoon*

You can find out more about Marcus Scott in the Redcliffe novels, a contemporary adult paranormal romance series set in Cornwall. And you can read the story of his human life in The Darkness of Love, set on a Victorian country estate in Hampshire. He also features in my spin-off short story, Christmas With the Vampires (yes, I know, totally out of season). Happy holidays!

2020: the Pandemic, the Lockdown, the Chaos

You couldn’t write this stuff! Twelve months ago, I wrote about how I was glad to see the end of 2019 as it had proved to be a painful and grief-stricken year. For many people 2020 has been the worst year ever, and while I didn’t experience bereavement due to the pandemic, I had a pretty traumatic time.

It began with the training of our rescue dog, Marley. We soon discovered that he was an escape artist, and after several awkward confrontations with our neighbours when he tried to claim their garden, we spent over £1000 installing enough fences and barriers to keep him at home. Seriously, our back garden looked like a prison yard by the time we finished! Then began his behavioural training program. By that time, we were heading into Lockdown and our local dog training centre was closed. They did offer a course online, however, so my daughters and I spent some time making videos of our progress, receiving feedback from the trainer, and generally trying to keep Marley occupied so that he didn’t escape again.

My grandad died in March following a long illness, which left my family and I worried for his widow. Nan decided to remain at home on her own with their two elderly dogs. Both dogs died in quick succession during lockdown, and now my Nan is completely alone for the first time in her 90-year life. We have a big family, and she could stay with relatives, but she is determined to stay in her own home and wait out the pandemic. Her neighbours are looking out for her, and close relatives visit every day to bring supplies and check in.

During Lockdown I had this crazy idea that I could finally finish writing book 6 in the Redcliffe Novels series. That didn’t happen. I think my Muse went into self-isolation, because she disappeared and I’m still waiting for her to return. Not to be deterred, I threw myself into the business of my pagan family lifestyle blog, SpookyMrsGreen, and that has come along in leaps and bounds. Then I decided to launch a reiki therapy business, because you know that is a great idea during a pandemic!

Oh, and then there was my home renovation project, when I single-handedly stripped all the wallpaper in our living/dining room, hall, stairs and landing, and the bathroom (don’t ask!), and then repainted all of those rooms by myself. Well, my children helped a little… and the dog! I was happy with the result, and hopefully in 2021 I can entice my Muse to return so we can finish what we started ten years ago… Please?!

Happy New Year, Happy New Book Series!

We are limping towards the end of 2019, and I am very glad to say good riddance to this challenging and painful year. My family and I have experienced bereavement, redundancy, and the death of our family car in the past twelve months. We battle through and we keep going, but it is time for some positive change. We began a new adventure by welcoming our dog, Marley into the family this December. He is a little bundle of chaos, adorable and infuriating. He will help us to heal.

I never did finish and publish book 6 in the Redcliffe Novels series this year. I was determined to end the decade with a complete series, but life got in the way and I lost my mojo. The book will be finished, but I am not setting a deadline. I need to garner some reader interest for the previous books in the series first. They are currently languishing in the dusty crevices of the internet, ignored and underappreciated. I need to drag them out, dust them off, and relaunch them into the reading world, although I have no idea how to achieve such a feat, despite all of my research. Any advice, fellow (more successful) writers?!

If you haven’t yet read Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel) Book 1, why don’t you give it a try and see if you want to experience the whole series? It is a good book, I promise! Happy New Year, and Happy New Book Series!

How to Love a Vampire

Do you love vampires? Are you fascinated by the mythology of these creatures, who present as human but can cause so much death and destruction? I studied vampires in popular culture for my bachelor’s degree at university many years ago, and that brought me to the point of writing my first vampire novel, Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel). I am now writing the last book in the series, and my vampires have battled with hunters, werewolves, witches and their own kind. To love a vampire is to enter a world of danger. Part of their allure is the promise of magic and power, but truthfully vampires exist only to feed. They can feed on more than human blood, but feed they must, and when they don’t, the consequences can be very dangerous. Here is an excerpt from book 5 in the Redcliffe novels series, Heart of the Vampire:

“You have to feed, Jack,” I insisted, “And you cannot use me. We tried that before and you almost killed me, remember?”

“You found a way to survive,” my vampire replied gruffly.

I laughed, but it was not amusement that brought such a reaction.

“I survived,” I said, emphasizing the word, “because of your brother. Danny saved me. He sacrificed his wolves so that I could claw back some human strength. Maybe that’s what caused this…” I gestured to the empty space on the bed behind me, “thing with Suri.”

“Perhaps,” Jack replied quietly, “But the point is, you survived.”

What Shall I Write Today?

I am late posting on the blog this week, and there are a few reasons for it. The main one is that I simply didn’t know what to write. I could very easily try and promote one of my novels or my Redcliffe series, but I’m bored of that. This is my space to be creative, and truthfully, I have lots of ideas for writing. I just need to sit down and get started, rather than distract myself with other duties. So that is what I’m doing today, in between those other duties.

Just as I was trying to decide on a subject for today’s blog post, I opened a drawer and found a couple of very old notebooks. Indeed, I had forgotten about one of them, and the other I had been searching for and couldn’t locate. It was in the same drawer I had already searched, but hidden underneath another notebook, and this one is very battered and well worn. But it is full of ideas. I had this notebook before my children were born, and I would jot down little snippets of writing inspiration to be used in the future. Well, now it’s the future, so maybe I should use them!

Here is a note that confused me: A view over Cardiff from a modern hotel window or the roof of a tall, historic building. It is early morning just before dawn, and the city is quiet, with electric lights reflecting off the river. It is romantic at this time, before the start of a busy working day in the human world. Now, I haven’t visited Cardiff before, but I have visited lots of beautiful places in Wales, and maybe this inspiration came from Manchester and I just changed the city. Who knows? But it is there, and perhaps I will incorporate it into a novel. There are hints of it in my upcoming novel Hunting the Hunted (currently with agents). I wonder what other gems I will find in this battered old notebook? The possibilities are endless!

A Hard Lesson for an Author #nevergiveup

I think I need to face facts. For the past seven years I have been trying to promote and sell my Redcliffe novels series of adult paranormal romance novels set in Cornwall, England. These stories came about from an idea I nurtured as a teenager, but back then I wasn’t confident enough to write them down. Instead I left them to simmer in my subconscious while I read as many paranormal, supernatural and occult books as I could get my hands on. It opened up a whole new world, and indeed a new way of life, as I discovered paganism and modern witchcraft.

Naturally my research fed into my books as I wrote, and what began as one standalone novel, Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), turned into a series of six books. I am currently preparing to publish Book 5 in the series, and Book 6 is in early stages of being written. After that I will end it. And I have begun to realise that maybe the world isn’t ready for the Redcliffe novels yet. Sales have been extremely modest to the point of non-existent for some of my more recent books. It seems that people are keen to buy Love Hurts, but they either don’t read the book, or they don’t like it enough to want to read the rest in the series. That understanding does pain me, but I must shake it off and move on.

The Redcliffe novels series has been a passion project, and it has given me focus and self-confidence as I learned about being a new mother, nurturing babies, and supporting my family. The Redcliffe novels are a little bit of me, Catherine Green. They reflect my personality, my interests, my understanding of the world. Yes, I would love to see many more people read and appreciate my novels, but I cannot force them, much as I would love to. I don’t have enough money to invest in advertising campaigns, or spare cash to pay for PR, so my efforts remain small and humble. But it won’t always be this way. I am writing another series of novels featuring vampire hunters, and these do not feature romance. They are raw and violent. Perhaps the world will be more receptive to the idea of those novels? Time will tell.

***Sneak Preview!*** Heart of the Vampire (A Redcliffe Novel) Book 5 #TheRedcliffeNovels

Welcome to the Season of the Witch and all things Spooky, my friends! I am excited to announce that we are now counting down to the launch of my next book in the Redcliffe novels series: Heart of the Vampire. Samhain is fast approaching in Redcliffe, Cornwall, and Jessica Stone must learn about control, power, and the love that she truly feels for her vampire boyfriend and his brother. Here is your sneaky preview:

Jessica, Simon said in a low voice, What is wrong?
He glanced to his left, following my gaze, and Danny did the same. Both men clearly saw nothing and returned their attention to me. I watched as Sally stood straight and looked at me with a small smile. She was clearly not solid, but I could recognise her features, the same long blonde hair that she wore in a high ponytail, her pale skin that she would accentuate with fake tanning lotion, and her bright blue eyes that had been both gentle and dangerous when she was alive. And she knew that I could see her.
I staggered back, almost falling onto the sofa, and Simon leaped forward to steady me. I held out my hand to stop him, not wanting to be weak, and I managed to keep my composure, but in the split second that I turned my attention to Simon, the vision of Sally disappeared. She never spoke. She simply vanished.
Jessica? Simon said again, hovering uncertainly nearby, What did you see?
I swallowed and looked from him to Danny, and then back to the empty space behind the desk. Danny was frowning and looking to his left, rubbing his arm as though he had an itch.
Didnt you see her? I asked.
Both men shook their heads, but Dannys expression turned from puzzled to knowing as he realised what I must have seen.
Sally, he said in a flat voice.
Simons head jerked round as he stared at his master in surprise.
            I nodded.
Yes, I whispered, I think I just saw a ghost.

Celebrate #PrideMonth at NN Light’s Book Heaven @NNP_W_Light

Did you know that most of my novels and short stories feature LGBTQ+ characters? I don’t set out to include them, or to write specifically about the characters in their unique perspectives. They simply have natural preferences to same sex or whatever feels natural. And to that end, I am participating in Promotion with Pride at N.N. Light’s Book Heaven.

You might like to read about my gay and bisexual werewolves in the Redcliffe novels series. Or my lesbian vampires in Vampire of Blackpool and Return of the Vampire Hunter. I am currently working on a couple of gay vampire novels set in Manchester, and I will also soon offer up something very different and much darker than my usual writing style… But that is top secret and you must wait until I am allowed to reveal more!

Eye of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel) Book 4 #TheRedcliffeNovels

Meeting Detective Jack Mason, and his brother Danny, brought about a powerful change, and Jessica’s magic was released. He fights to protect his master from the ethereal animal familiar who threatens to claim their pack. Who knew the Cornish coast could be so deadly?

Excerpt:

I dont know, I replied, Am I being naïve?

Maybe, Crystal said, You still have a lot to learn about living with supernatural creatures. Actually, you have a lot to learn about being one, too.
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
So, I take it one day at a time, then, I said.
            Crystal nodded.
Yes, she replied, I think that is the best way to handle everything. Give Danny the space to mourn for his lost lieutenant, but dont shut him out if he asks you for help. It will be uncomfortable, but I know you care about him and you cannot hide the fact. Your friendship is just a little more physical than it would be with another human.
            I swallowed nervously.
You keep talking about us as non-human, I said, But I am still human, surely. I mean, yes I have this animal familiar living inside my subconscious somewhere, but physically Im just a normal person, right?
Crystal stared straight at me, and in the soft lamp light of her living room her violet eyes seemed to glow like jewels. It was eerie, but she was incredibly beautiful in a frightening way. My breath caught in my throat as I stared at her, unable to look away.
You are both, she replied, You are human, yes, but you are a witch Jessica. If you take some time to study your craft, learn how to utilize your powers and those of your animal familiar, you will become far more than a mere human. But it takes time, patience, and lots of practice.
I nodded and a pang of excitement shot through me. It was almost like a voice inside my head was screaming for me to get on with it and discover what we were capable of. I didnt know who the we was. I knew that it was not Suri. It was yet another spiritual entity, and one that I did not have the strength to explore at this time. But maybe later, when everything had settled with Jack and Danny, I could explore my witchcraft and see where it took me.
I returned home that night feeling a lot lighter in my heart and with a slightly clearer mind. Crystal couldnt fix my problems, but she had certainly given me the advice I needed. I was no longer in the human world. I had to stop thinking like one, and I couldnt keep hiding from Danny and the wolves. It was time to return to the Ship Inn.

Excerpt:

“Of course we frighten the alpha,” she said scornfully, in my mind, “He is but a wolf. We are far superior. Allow me to demonstrate.”
And she sprang forward without warning, heading straight for my body. I cried out, trying to move away from Danny and Simon, but I was too slow. My body convulsed as Suri merged her spirit with mine. I felt it happen, but I was powerless to react. I had no idea what I was dealing with. I was still just a witch in training. Opening my eyes, I turned slowly, searching for the alpha male. Danny was standing in the doorway, staring at me, his own power flaring, swirling around him in a delicious storm of turmoil. Licking my lips, I advanced upon him slowly, stalking my prey. My body felt lithe and supple, and while I still looked and walked like a human, I could feel a tail swishing behind me, and my muscles were that of the snow tiger. She was superimposed around my body, and both wolves could clearly see her.
“Jessica,” Danny said, shaking his head, “Jessica, please don’t do this. Send her away. Fight her.”
I laughed, and my voice sounded deep and throaty, ending in a growl.
“I do not want to send her away,” I said, “I want to embrace her power. She is my tiger. We work together.”
“You don’t mean that,” Danny replied, “Remember who I am.”
“You are the alpha male,” I said, “You are worthy of our attention.”
“Jessica,” Danny said, “I do not want to play with your tiger. I want you,” he paused, staring at me with glowing blue eyes, “Jessica, I want you.” He said again.
I hesitated, mulling over his words. Something stirred within me, a memory of another man who looked identical to the alpha. The other man was not a wolf. He was dead.  I didn’t want a dead thing. I wanted heat, power, and life. I moved towards the alpha, my body preparing to pounce. My movements were smooth, agile and feline. I loved the way I moved, so graceful and delicate, so strong. I pounced.

Excerpt:

Sally opened a door further along the corridor.
“This is Danny’s-” she said, and then stopped abruptly.
I looked into the room to see Danny and Simon sharing a passionate kiss in front of a desk. They both jumped apart and then smiled sheepishly at us and I gasped in surprise.
Sally finished, “-office. Sorry boys I didn’t know we were interrupting!” she said with a smile and a wink.
I stood awkwardly in the doorway, and Simon stepped away from the desk rubbing his mouth with the back of his hand. Danny ruffled a hand through his hair in a gesture identical to his brother, and then he stepped forward, smiling.
“Jessica,” he said warmly, “it’s good to see you here. I was going to meet you upstairs but I got waylaid.” He looked meaningfully at Simon, who blushed and ducked his head.
I glanced at Sally who just smiled, walked into the room, and sat on the sofa adjacent to the desk, where Simon was now sitting. I was confused. She didn’t seem at all bothered by their behaviour even though I knew she was in love with Danny.  This must be a wolf thing. I cleared my throat and looked at Danny.
“Yeah I bumped into Sally upstairs and she brought me down,” I said, “Should I leave?”
Danny shook his head and moved towards me.
“No of course not,” he said, “Simon and I were just discussing some pack business.  Actually, Simon could you tell Sally please? I will give Jessica a tour.”
Simon nodded and turned his attention to Sally, and I followed Danny out into the corridor.

Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel) Book 1 #TheRedcliffeNovels

Love Hurts is about a young woman who runs a bookshop in Cornwall with her best friend. She falls in love with a local police detective and later discovers that he is a vampire, and that his identical twin brother is a werewolf. She is dragged into their complicated and dangerous lives, to her detriment, where secrets are told and lives are lost...

The Redcliffe novels series follow the adventures of bookshop owner Jessica Stone as she meets a man and falls in love, only to discover the hidden werewolf secrets of her close friends. That includes Simon Bunce, manager of the Ship Inn, who turns out to be lieutenant to the Redcliffe werewolf pack, and lover to the wolf alpha Danny Mason. He fights to protect his master from the ethereal animal familiar who threatens to claim their pack. Who knew the Cornish coast could be so deadly?

Excerpt:

Danny moved away from the table and pushed his hair out of his eyes, a gesture identical to his brother. How could I tell them apart? I don’t know; it was a subtle knowledge, something different in their tone of voice, the way they dressed, and their attitude. Whatever it was, I knew this was Danny standing in front of me. His face became serious suddenly as he spoke.
“I got a message on the mobile from you,” he said, “and the office said you had been phoning.  Is everything alright?”
I told him about the strange women that had visited today and when I said their names he went pale and his body went very still. He spoke in a calm, careful voice.
“They said meet them at 9pm in the Old Cemetery?” he asked.
            I nodded, my heart pounding.
“Yes,” I replied, “and the American woman, LuAnn, said she wants to see you again. And she said to go alone; this doesn’t concern your brother or your pack.”
Here I paused, wondering how to tell him the rest of the message, but I knew it was important. He waited patiently for me to continue.
“Danny,” I faltered, “she said you must not take back-up, because if you do she will kill the people you care about. And she was very clear on that message. What did she mean by that?”
            I paused,
“She was a bit scary Danny, what kind of acquaintance is she?” I asked.
He was very serious as he replied.
“She is connected to the job in Scotland; they both are.” he said, “I’m sorry Jessica; it looks like we have inadvertently drawn you into our mess. I need to find Jack and go sort this out. Please promise me you will stay home, don’t answer the door unless you know who it is, and phone Jack or me if you get worried about anything, no matter how small or trivial. Will you do that?”
He grabbed my shoulders, staring directly into my eyes, and I gasped, shocked at his forcefulness. I nodded, feeling sick with nerves.
“Yes of course.” I said, “Am I in danger?  What about Liz?”
He relaxed slightly and eased his grip on me.
“Liz will be fine,” he said, “she is of no concern to them. But they seem to have found out about you and your relationship with Jack and me.You don’t need to be overly concerned just yet; hopefully we can settle this tonight. Please just stay home and keep all your doors locked and your mobile phone handy, ok?”
I nodded and Danny left, saying he would call Jack on the way.
