Support Small Business this #BlackFriday!

Are you looking for the best #BlackFriday deals this year? It seems more important now because of the pandemic, with lots of non-essential shops still recovering from lockdowns and restrictions here in England. These shops have had to increase their efforts to sell more products online, competing with big brands and established internet stores. I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I believe in not over-commercializing holidays such as Christmas. However, I sell books for a living. If I don’t sell the books I write, I won’t make any money, and that could negatively affect my children and husband.

I propose a compromise: think about the small business owners, including indie authors, craft businesses, local produce etc. They rely on income from the sales of the stock that they lovingly create by hand. We should support those businesses. When I hear about #BlackFriday, my thoughts turn to Amazon. Well, they are made up of small business owners, like me, who rely on royalties paid via Amazon for the sales of our books. Amazon is not necessarily the big bad giant that some people believe. Most of the books published on Amazon will pay decent royalties to their authors, myself included. Check the names of the sellers when you shop, and you will find some small, independent retailers.

Why not search for alternative Christmas gifts for your friends and family? Find them a book written and produced independently by a local author. Try a CD or buy tickets to see a local musician. Or even search for some handcrafted bespoke trinkets, jewellery, furniture or bric-a-brac. The small business owners will be far more grateful for your custom and will make more effort to give you the personal customer service that makes you feel good about parting with your hard-earned cash. Thank you.

#TheRedcliffeNovels – Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel) Book 1

Set in the fictional seaside town of Redcliffe in Cornwall, Love Hurts is about a young woman who runs a bookshop with her best friend. She falls in love with a local police detective and later discovers that he is a vampire, and that his identical twin brother is a werewolf. She is dragged into their complicated and dangerous lives, to her detriment, where secrets are told and lives are lost...

What vampire book genre is the book?

My novel is a contemporary paranormal romance

What are the ‘themes’ of this book?

There is adult content, sexually explicit scenes and scenes of violence

What is the setting of your book series or book?

The Redcliffe Novels series is set in the fictional seaside town of Redcliffe in Cornwall, England.

What’s in store for readers?

This is the story of my heroine Jessica Stone as she struggles with being in love with a vampire, while having sexual feelings towards his identical twin brother who is a werewolf. To further complicate things, Jessica discovers she is a witch, and since she was orphaned at a young age, she had no family to guide her into her heritage. Things kick off with the aid of her newly discovered non-human friends, and her easy life spirals out of control.

Words from the Author

I have always been fascinated by the vampire myth and wrote my dissertation on vampires for my university degree. Contrary to popular folklore, I have always viewed vampires as a romantic and misunderstood creature, although I do not doubt their ability to kill and destroy. To me they represent the primitive, dangerous part of ourselves that humans prefer to ignore.

Book Review: Taming the Vampire (Blood and Absinthe) by Chloe Hart

This is my kind of vampire story! Fast paced, full of sex, passion and just the right amount of magic. It was a quick read, and had been lurking on my Kindle waiting for me to discover it… so glad I gave it a chance! I am now reading the entire Blood and Absinthe series, and loving every moment of it. These books offer a quick fix for vampire fans who like the darker side of the genre, and they are relatable in real terms at the same time.

Psychic Encounter While Antique-Shopping Inspires Novel @AdriennedeWolfe

By Adrienne deWolfe

I got the idea for my Historical Romance novel, Seduced By An Angel, when I bumped into a psychic at an antique store.

She was wandering around the showroom, “touching” furniture and reporting the various scenes from the past that she psychically observed (weddings, children reading school books, couples dancing at Christmas parties, etc.)  She explained that she was learning to fine-tune her gift of “psychometry.” When she touched man-made objects, she could see their owners “through time” and peek into their lives.

I thought, “Oh my gosh, I HAVE to write a story about that!”

So in Seduced By An Angel, outlaw Jesse Quaid (who is part Cherokee,) has a dream from Great Spirit that Sera Jones can clear his name of murder. Jesse can’t imagine how a 19-year-old preacher’s daughter can help him, until he learns that Sera has visions about the future and the past.

Because Sera is terrified of her visions, Jesse has to teach her how to accept her gift before he can persuade her to help him clear his name.

Seduced By an Angel is part of my award-winning Velvet Lies Series (which is on sale.) If you like Historical Romance novels with bad-boy heroes, adorable baby animals, mischievous orphans, and a slice of Victorian America, you’ll enjoy this bestselling series. Here’s an excerpt from Seduced By An Angel.

Excerpt
Seduced By An Angel
Book 3, Velvet Lies Series
By Adrienne deWolfe

(Set-up: Sera is in a “haunted” part of the woods, where she is hiding from outlaws.  While communicating with a Native American ghost, named Hiawassee, Sera begins to have visions.)

Sera was walking behind a waterfall in a kaleidoscopic haze of color. Through the cloud of rainbows that swirled around her, she could see isolated pockets of horrific scenes: Jesse getting lynched. Or shot. Or bludgeoned.
*From any one point in time, there's a minimum of three futures,* the ghost of Jesse’s grandmother whispered in her ear. *You can stop the madness. But first, you must stop the outlaws.*
Sera felt numb. Insanely calm. She didn't doubt her visions. She didn't question Hiawassee. She merely followed the Medicine Woman's spirit as it glided before her, sweeping along a tunnel.
Flickering water reflections danced upon the walls and the roof, which was rife with orange lichens and green algae. Some 20 paces ahead, she could see the tunnel's end through the mystical, silvery glow of Hiawassee's body.
*We are forbidden to interfere,* the ghost told her.
*We?*
*All of us.*
Sera frowned and halted beside Hiawassee, squinting into the sunlight at the tunnel's end. She gaped at the scene that stretched before her. Floating in and out of the falls, perched upon the cliff ledges, swinging from the trees, and splashing in the river were hundreds of ghosts. Most of them were women and children.
Ywahoo Falls.
*Sacred Cherokee burial ground,* Hiawassee confirmed mildly.
Sera nodded uncomfortably. The legend was known to her. Some 70 years ago, Cherokee women had journeyed with their children to this spot, rendezvousing under the full moon. Under the leadership of Comblossom, daughter of the great war chief, Doublehead, hundreds of innocents had gathered here, accompanied by only a handful of braves.
The women and their children had intended to walk the 125 miles to a school in Chattanooga, where they had been promised protection and a White man's education. But the Cherokees had been betrayed. A contingent of Tennessee soldiers had intercepted the innocents at Ywahoo Falls and massacred them.
*You were barely six years old,* Hiawassee told Sera gently. *Jesse, he was eight. You were meant to find each other in that lifetime, too. And you did—for the last few minutes. He tried to protect you.*
Tears rolled down Sera's cheeks. *Why?* she whispered. *Why must there be so much hatred?*
*Men are allowed free will,* Hiawassee answered. *You, too, will choose between compassion and hatred.  Choose wisely.*

Hunting the Hunted - An Excerpt from my #NaNoWriMo WIP

Sometimes I forget that not everybody knows my characters the same way that I do. My Redcliffe series has given me a whole new group of fictional friends that live in a part of my psyche where their lives are real, at least in some alternate universe. It is the same for my characters from other novels, including The Vampire of Blackpool (still seeking a publisher), and my latest work in progress, Hunting the Hunted. To that end I have decided to share an excerpt from my current novel, so that you see a little of the madness I was working with during #NaNoWriMo. Enjoy!

We watched our hunters race along the pavement, disappearing from view as the uniformed police officers followed them. The police were fast. They sent their armed officers after the hunters, and the others quickly closed off the street and worked to ensure their precious human civilians were safe. I leaped up onto the roof of the high building, and Lottie followed. We strode across the base of the sloping roof, and I reached out telepathically to locate my prey. I sensed William almost immediately. He was running down a narrow alley between a hotel and an office building, with his sister close behind. The police were still following them. And they had reached a dead end. I leaped across the wide expanse of road, high enough that the humans below would not see me, and I landed on a high balcony just in time to see my hunters being arrested. William was shouting at them not to grab his injured shoulder, and Samantha was shouting something about them being private investigators. It didn’t help. They were bundled roughly into the back of the waiting police van, having first been relieved of their weapons by the law enforcers. I stood in the shadows and observed the spectacle.
“There you are,” Lottie said as she swooped down to land beside me, “You are fast, for an old vampire!”

Why I Love Anita Blake. Yes, that includes all of the sex!

I came across an article recently in which another reader was expressing her blatant disgust at the turn of events in the Anita Blake, vampire hunter series of novels by Laurell K Hamilton. I was actually quite surprised with the vehemence of her words. But then I stopped and thought about it. Everybody views the world around them differently. And evidently, some people, and that includes loyal fans of the Anita Blake series, have fallen out of love with our favourite feisty vampire hunter.

Why would this be? Well, basically, it seemed to happen at the time when Anita Blake gathered several metaphysical animal powers, and when she took time to develop her magical abilities. Then she realised that she actually needed to have sex. She couldn’t survive on violence alone. And she fell in love. On the face of it, that can sound quite amusing. When would anybody need to have sex? More frequently than you imagine, I think. Sex and love are intertwined, and that can be both a blessing and a curse for many people.

It all began with Guilty Pleasures
When I first discovered Anita Blake, ooh, about twelve years ago, I fell in love instantly with her. I truly admire Laurell K Hamilton for continuing and persevering with her vision. She took many years to have her novels noticed by the big publishing houses. She never gave up. And now she has a series that is still going strong, and it has been republished in many formats, including comic books. I liked Anita Blake because she was a new kind of heroine back then. She was tough, she could fight, she could stand up for herself. And she didn't need love.

There it is. The Anita Blake series started out as more of an action-horror genre story. There was lots of violence, blood and guts. She raised zombies, she worked magic, and she killed vampires. But then she fell in love with a vampire. And a werewolf. And several other creatures. I think this is where people began to lose interest. And I personally think that is a very interesting observation on the nature of human beings today.

Why do we find it more acceptable to experience violence and pain than we do to experience love and sexual pleasure? Why is sex such a taboo subject of conversation, even in today’s modern, enlightened times? I don’t know. I enjoy reading about Anita Blake’s softer side. I like to see her having fun, relaxing and not being stuck in yet another fight to the death with some evil force or other. And yes, I even understand how she can be in love with more than one man (and woman). And I will continue to read the series for as long as Laurell K Hamilton continues to write it. She gave me the confidence to write my own novels, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Will I Succeed This Time? #NaNoWriMo

It is that time of year folks. How on earth did we get to November already? I have no idea. All I know is it has been a long and challenging year, and yet it seems to have gone really quickly. Back in April I attempted to do #CampNaNoWriMo. It wasn't quite the success I anticipated, but at least now I have the beginnings of a YA novel languishing on my hard drive until such time as I feel the urge to finish it.

For #NaNoWriMo 2014 I have returned to my vampires. OK, I never truly left them. But this time I am writing a story about a vampire hunter. Hannah Oakley retired from the job nine years ago after the vampire she was hunting seduced and almost killed her. She never did finish the job, and the vampire is out there, somewhere. Hannah is now married with two young children, and finding motherhood both a joy and a chore (sound familiar?). We meet her at the point where she is remembering the past, wondering about her former vampire lover, and wondering if she will ever be able to slay the one vampire who broke through her strong defenses.

The good news is, I am getting into this story. It is quite exciting, it is calling to me, albeit it faintly at the moment, and I do feel the urge to write every day. My difficultly lies with the ever-present domestic distractions. I am currently home alone with my own two young children, one of whom returns to pre-school next week after an extended half-term holiday. Perhaps then I might settle into a proper writing routine. As it stands I have written 4,957 words. The NaNoWriMo stats tell me at this rate I will complete the challenge on January 10th 2015. I had better suck it up, get my ass into gear, and get some words on the page!

Happy writing, fellow Wrimos!

The Writing Blog Hop - #amwriting #whywrite #process

It took me a little while to respond to this blog hop, but thank you to J Lenni Dorner for inviting me to join…

1. What am I working on now?

Technically I am not working on anything specific. My time is currently taken up with two young children, a dog and a few domestic distractions. I do have 2 works-in-progress however, and I will be continuing them during the course of the next year or so. One is book 4 in the Redcliffe series, following the adventures of Jessica Stone and her supernatural friends in Cornwall, and the other is about a female vampire hunter with past life secrets to unearth…

2. How does my work differ from others in its genre?

My work is set in the UK, which to my knowledge is rare for popular vampire/werewolf/witch stories. I mean, yes there is the ultimate classic novel by Bram Stoker, and yes I know Darren Shan writes about vampires, but I haven’t found any British writers in the shops that offer adult paranormal stories in everyday situations. My characters could be your local shop owners, the landlord of your local pub, even your local police detective or hospital nurse…

3. Why do I write what I do?

I have to! The stories came to me as a child, although they have evolved and matured over time along with me. I always have something whizzing round my head that is desperate to be expressed. My stories must be told!

4. How does my writing process work?

I am what is called a ‘pantser’ in the writing world. That means I write by the seat of my pants! I did try structuring my first novel Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), but after that I just allowed the words to flow, and then I worried about editing and tidying afterwards. It is so exciting to read something back and realise that it is bloody good!

******************************************

OK, I will be a little slack here and not tag any more writers to share. However, if you are a reading this and you are a writer who would like to join the hop, please comment with a link to your blog and hop along! Thanks for reading.

#AmReading ***The Redcliffe Novels Special Offer!*** Hot British Urban Fantasy Series

That’s right folks, I am promoting again! *Groan* I know, I know, but how else will I save up for a new car? Or my campervan for that matter…

Anyway, back to the subject. My fabulous urban fantasy series the Redcliffe novels are on special offer at the moment if you purchase them on Kindle. How convenient! You could download them all now for less than the price of a posh coffee or a fancy cake… And you could be reading them on the bus, the plane, the train, or at  home if you prefer.

Read them anywhere, but I guarantee you will fall in love with the Mason brothers and their friends! If you prefer the anti-hero character types then look no further. I try to conform to traditional stereotypes with my vampires, witches and werewolves, but you know what, this is how they are and there is nothing I can do about it!

Have a lovely day my friends, and feel free to leave a review when you are finished…

#SampleSunday The Darkness of Love

It has been a while since I shared an excerpt from one of my novels, so here is something from my latest release, The Darkness of Love...

“Do you desire me, Marcus?” she asked, grabbing his hand.  What was this?  She was never so bold, never so brazen with a man!  Yet she didn’t feel light-headed or intoxicated.  Her words came naturally.
“Yes, Sarah, I desire you very much,” Marcus replied, shaking.
She grabbed his hand and clasped it to her bosom, and  he couldn’t contain himself any longer.  He embraced her in his strong arms, pressed his lips to hers, and she kissed him hungrily.  She tasted so sweet, so addictive.  Marcus groaned as he pressed her body to him, wrapping his arms around her slender waist, feeling her delicate skin beneath his fingers.  Then he broke off as he realised what he was doing.
“Sarah!” he gasped, “What are we doing?  This is madness!”
She laughed, reckless suddenly.
“I know,” she said, “It is completely insane.  But I cannot ignore it any longer Marcus.  I love my husband, I always will, but I am no cuckold.  I know that he has mistresses.  Why, then shouldn’t I take my own pleasure elsewhere?”

There’s Something About the Water in Redcliffe! #ReadMe

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of being invited as a special guest author to my local book club. I am actually a member of the book club anyway, so it was quite a strange experience. I was very anxious when I learned that our book of the month for February was my first novel Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel). What would my book club friends think of it? What if they hated it? What if they loved it? What would I say?

As it turned out they all did enjoy my book, and that included a few friends who have never read any paranormal novels before. I take this as an added compliment. I was also very honoured when one of the women brought all three of my Redcliffe novels with her and asked me to sign them because she enjoyed reading them so much. We settled down and got stuck into conversation.

I was happy to be told that the readers liked my book because it provides a bit of ‘easy reading.’ It is genre fiction, primarily paranormal romance, and the chapters are short. I did this based on my personal experience. As a reader I always like to finish a chapter when reading my book. I hate having to put a book down with the bookmark in a random page. It just doesn’t feel right, I can’t explain it. So I chose to write short chapters in my novels.

The characters and setting were all well-received. There were warm feelings and mixed feelings towards everyone in Redcliffe, just as I had intended, and there were also a few unexpected reactions. Two of my readers asked about the significance of drinking water. That surprised me! Apparently there are lots of references to drinking water in Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel). I’m not saying yes or no to the question “Is it relevant?” I will admit that the question was unexpected and gave me something to think about for my continuing series… And the same goes for the storyline of pregnancy and having a baby. Take a look!

Four Intriguing Questions #BlogHop

Hello and welcome to my entry for the fabulous frog blog hop! Thank you to Flossie Benton Rogers for inviting me to play…

1. What are you working on now?

My current work in progress is the fourth novel in the Redcliffe series. Love Redeems (A Redcliffe Novel) was published earlier this year and it concluded the initial trilogy when my heroine Jessica Stone met the Mason brothers. Now her story continues, although at this stage anything could happen as she becomes involved with the Redcliffe werewolf pack while trying not to fight with her vampire lover.

2. How is your current WIP different from others in the genre?

Mine are totally British for starters! I find the majority of paranormal romance novels in mainstream avenues seem to be American, which is fine but I wanted something I could relate to as a small-town girl from the North of England. So I wrote something set in Cornwall, which is actually in South West England, but hey-ho! At least my heroine is a northerner who moved down south, and we meet some interesting characters from Ireland as well as the native Cornish folk.

3. Why do you write?

It stops me from going insane with the madness that would otherwise accumulate inside my mind. Well, that and the fact that I can’t help but dream up my own stories in response to books I read and television I watch. It is just natural for me; I have to write.

4. How does your writing process work?

Hmm, I tend to use a method known as ‘free writing.’ I simply sit in front of the computer with a vague idea of my topic/subject/setting, and I just write. Often I have no idea what to expect from my characters, or even where the story is going, but it usually turns out very well. Actually, my characters like to surprise me with random twists and turns, which is very exciting!

Book Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I read this for my local book club, and I was quite excited at the prospect because it had been on my to-read list since I first spotted it in my local bookstore. Anyway, I have to say I ended up with a sort of confused response to the story. In the beginning I was full of enthusiasm, even when I was confused by the first few chapters. It took a little while for me to make any sense of it, and I found myself thinking throughout “what is the point of this whole ‘game’ storyline?” I enjoyed the love story element, and the descriptive text was beautiful in places, but all in all I would only ever say this was a good  book, not excellent. I had to read it to the end, but I never quite connected on an emotional level.
