Book Review Captain Corelli’s Mandolin #AmReading
Book Review Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis De Bernieres
Wow! This is one fantastic novel! I have to admit the book took me a heck of a long time to read, but only because it is very deep, very intelligent, and I started reading it soon after the birth of my baby when my body was going through all sorts of crazy hormone-related stuff. Therefore I think this book is probably one of the longest reading projects I have ever taken. I am so glad I persevered. The first few chapters were quite self-indulgent and fairly boring, but on the recommendations of my book club buddies, I kept going. And I loved it. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me cringe. I loved the descriptive language, the variety of characters, and the entertaining history lesson that it gave me.

Today I hand over my blog to our guest, Mary Martinez. Take it away Mary...
Thank you for letting me join you today, Catherine. First, a bit about myself, I live in the US in Magna, Utah. That is about 15 minutes west of Salt Lake City. It’s an experience, and if you ever visit you’ll know what I mean. I love the mountains, and the seasons. And in Utah, you can experience every one, in ONE day. It’s the only place I know you can snow ski in the morning and golf or water ski in the afternoon. My husband and I love to travel, it’s a shame we are not independently wealthy. But we go as often as we can afford.
Together we have six grown children and by Christmas of this year, we’ll have eleven grandchildren. We have papa and nana night every other Wednesday. It’s fun for the kids to see each other and I get to see them since I have a day job on top of writing. I’ve decided the best thing about kids, is the grandchildren.
I hope it’s okay, but I’m going to share a couple of things today. First, Four Sisters is a story I’ve been working for years, it’s close to my heart for many reasons, all would most likely bore the pants off everyone. This is due out in June.
This story is not about love, or in the end, sickness, but the relationship of a family. What can tear a family apart, and what can bring it back together again. It’s a challenge, and I hope that Four Sisters live up to it.

Special Agent Reagan Beckett specializes in terrorists focused on shipping and financial backing, two major threats to the west coast. When a new threat looked toward one of the biggest worldwide financial institutions, she was the logical person for the team.
Reagan’s New York task force team includes a new partner, Paco Luis Perez from D.C., and FBI Special Agent, Spencer Alexander Williams III, advising as the local liaison. To work undercover with these two men, Reagan knows she’ll have to trust them with her life. Her preliminary research indicates both men have excellent records, accommodations to be proud of, and seemingly nothing to cause her much worry. I Received Gifts from #WorldBookNight, Hooray!
I am a Very Bad Author. I totally missed World Book Night, and after I had planned to get involved with a local event too! *smacks one's fingers very sharply*
I blame the children. Not in a bad way of course. I have simply been so distracted as a mother lately that my professional life has been put on hold. But that is all about to change. My books must be written, edited, distributed and read. And that is my job.
Yesterday my friend and her son took me and my daughters out for a day trip. We visited the town of New Brighton on the Wirral, and despite the rain we had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. We certainly plan to return for a beach day when the weather improves. And the town also gave me ideas for new stories, which is fabulous.
On the way home we were hungry and tired, and on impulse we stopped at the Chef and Brewer Blue Cap pub in Northwich. It is near my home but I have never been for a meal. I highly recommend it. The service was excellent, the meal was yummy, and the price was very reasonable.
Quite by chance we were approached by a lady sitting at a nearby table. So preoccupied with our children were we, that my friend and I never even saw the table full of brand new books situated near to the main entrance of the pub. We had no idea it was World Book Night. That was until we were offered a stack of free books, which we duly accepted very gratefully!
Now, when will I find the time to read all of these new treasures? I have no idea, but I will do it...

Although born in the United States, annamaria bazzi spent a great deal of her childhood in Sicily, Italy, in a town called Sciacca. Italian was the language spoken at home. Therefore, she had no problems when she found herself growing up in a strange country. Upon returning to the states, she promised herself she would speak without an accent. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Computers with a minor in Spanish.
annamaria spent twenty years programming systems for large corporations, creating innovative solution, and addressing customer problems. During those years, she raised four daughters and one husband. annamaria lives in Richmond Virginia with her small family where she now dedicates a good part of her day writing.

Book Review: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
I finally got round to reading this classic novel just before Christmas, and I finished reading it in January. I loved it! Dickens had me chuckling from the very first page with his witty description and conversational tone.
Pip is a thoroughly loveable character, and the story is just as relevant now as it was all those years ago when it was first written. In some ways I found it a little sad that British society still has parallels with the austere and oppressive Victorian era, although there is a part of me that thrives on nostalgia. I also felt quite surprised to see the ‘text speak’ in the sections where Pip was teaching Joe to write on a tablet (you know, the old-fashioned chalkboards, not the modern electrical versions). I couldn’t help but think that maybe Mr Dickens was something of a prophet when he described these activities… anyway I highly recommend this book to everybody.

Oh, for the Love of Books!
I am feeling rather sorry for myself at the moment. I am an avid reader. Well, I was an avid reader. I mean, I adore books, always have done, and I always have reading material to hand wherever I go. But lately I have found myself exhausted as a result of several domestic upheavals, and as a result I finished reading one book and actually didn’t start reading another for nearly two weeks. That is shocking!
I don’t think I have ever gone so long without holding a book and taking time to savour the pages and their contents. Anyway, I am relieved to say I have since rectified this problem, although I am only two chapters in to my latest paperback from the pile in my bedroom. I have chosen to read Torment by Lauren Kate, since I enjoyed her first book in the series, Fallen, so much. The novel itself is a hefty paperback, which is what I needed, since I also feel like I have neglected my beloved friends recently in favour of my new Kindle Fire HD.
I suppose we all have times of drought, so to speak. This particular drought was not a surprise to me in the circumstances, but it was quite distressing nonetheless. My fellow book lovers will understand, I am sure. Well, my children are in bed, I am catching up on some work, and then I am off to read a chapter… or two!

It's All About the Books! #MidLitFest
As we move into a new month and the promise of the Spring season, I feel especially excited because this coming week it is all about the books! I mean, every week is all about books for me (and children of course), but this week we celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 6th March.
World Book Day not only means my daughter can dress up for the day at pre-school, and we get vouchers for money off children's books, but World Book Day UK sees the (un)official launch of the very first Middlewich Literary Festival, and I have been invited as a guest author. I am very honoured! There will be short story competitions for local school children, featured authors and poets showcasing their work, the offer of literary critiques from speakers (possibly me), and a general gathering of readers and writers sharing the book love. In fact, I want to start a new Twitter handle for it: #MidLitFest
Not only that, but on Monday 2nd March the Middlewich Readers book club will be discussing my first novel Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), and I will be present to answer questions and join the chat. I am excited but a little bit nervous about the experience...

#ReadMe – College is a Dangerous Place; The Teen Game - #HDH
Hello and welcome to the Hump Day Hook. Today I share an
excerpt from my first published short story The Teen Game, featured in
the YA anthology Devils, Demons and Werewolves…
That afternoon I sat near to the boy I wanted. He was tall and slender with short black
hair in a spiked style. I learnt that
his name was David Samson and I set about making small talk while we had our
first practical art lesson. He was
extremely shy and seemed confused as to why I wanted his attention but slowly
he began to respond, amid much cajoling from his friends. He was another local born and bred who had
come to college straight from the affiliated high school. I was very much the outsider in this place
but that didn’t faze me in the slightest.
Shelley and I ended our first day with invitations to join a group of
boys at the pool club in the nearby cinema complex on Wednesday evening. Naturally the group included my David. Everything was progressing smoothly.

from my new book, Victorian vampire novel The Darkness of Love.
“Walk me to my room,
Marcus,” Lady Amelia purred beside him.
Marcus jumped, startled out
of his reverie.
“Yes, of course my Lady.”
he replied, flustered.
Lady Amelia laughed, and
the sound echoed in Marcus’ head and sent shivers of anticipation up and down
his spine. He glanced at the powerful
woman beside him. She was enchanting,
like a forbidden fruit that would taste delicious but would cost you your
life. Her lips were full, pouting, and
a rich red colour. Her eyes sparkled
dangerously, promising mischief and delight.
And her pale bosom heaved above its tight corset of deep blue
velvet. Marcus’ mind switched back to
earthly pleasures, and he felt the familiar stirrings of lust. It had been a very strange evening all
things considered. Perhaps there was
more to come.

Book Review: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Here is my review of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Fascinating and disturbing, worryingly close to our everyday reality
I read this book as the first on the list in my newly formed
local book club. It was a book I had not heard of before, and I admit I was a
little snobbish and decided right away that I wouldn’t enjoy it, even though I
knew nothing about the story or the author. I think I have been reading a few
too many indie books recently! Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed Gone Girl,
and I will definitely read the other books written by Gillian Flynn. It had me
hooked from the first chapter, and I felt a certain empathy for the lead
characters, more especially Nick, even though he has his faults. They were
believable and flawed just like the rest of us, and I can even relate aspects
of all the characters to people I know in real life. The only criticism of this
book is that I didn’t like the ending, and nor did my fellow book club members.
It was a total anti-climax and left you feeling a little flat and unfulfilled, although
I think this was intentional on the author’s part. Try the book for yourself,
and you won’t be disappointed.

A story inspired by a local legend in East Cheshire, England
I was quite excited to read this book, since it was set in my home county and an area with which I have become familiar during recent years. Unfortunately, I really struggled with this book. Perhaps the reason is that I am more interested in adult themes and paranormal tales at the moment. This novel is a fantasy story incorporating myth, magic and folklore, and it will be a treat for the right reader. It just wasn’t for me at this time, and I found it confusing in places.

She's a senior and will not divulge that - ladies prerogative but she will be collecting a pension in a few years (grin.) She was educated in her natal area and moved to Canada in the year 2000. Jessie wrote children's and fantasy stories as a teenager. When she matured she moved on to writing adult stories. She has a great imagination and enjoys turning her vision-like dreams into enjoyable tales. Jessie considers herself as a Spiritual Christian who believes in the Power of God - but that doesn't stop her writing paranormal fiction with ghosts and demons! It might have been my imagination, but when our eyes met, I felt something stirring inside me. I stared at her, wondering what had just happened, and I could still feel the tingling warmth on my skin. There was something between us, but I didn’t know quite what.
Everything felt right, like we were supposed to be together.
Tracey looked away, breaking our connection. “Do you need help with anything?”
“Nope. Everything's ready.” Even though I could have stared at her all night, I didn’t want
to ruin the evening. So I turned my attention to our dinner and got the bruschetta and the
garlic bread on the table.
“Mmm, it looks delicious, chef.” Tracey laughed. She had quite the spirit, and unlike so
many women, she didn’t appear to be complicated.
When I placed the shrimp Alfredo linguini on the table, Tracey literally licked her lips. “I think I might join you for dinner every night. It smells so good.”
“I would love that,” I replied. “The company would be nice.”
Tracy was unsettling to me, causing me to lose tact and intelligence.
For the most part, we ate in silence. Often I found myself just staring at her, like she was going to run away if I wasn’t watching her. I’d remembered her features from the first time I saw her, but she seemed different now, almost serene and calm. The first time I’d met her, I had seen the love and devotion for Mrs. Howard in her eyes, but now they were tired and sad.
Regardless of how beautiful I thought she looked tonight, I wanted to be able to change that for
her, to bring happiness to her eyes.
