Support Small Business this #BlackFriday!

How do you feel about the #BlackFriday and #CyberWeekend phenomenon? Let’s face it, we can barely avoid the hype in this day and age. It is how we have evolved in society. I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I believe in not over-commercializing holidays such as Christmas. However, I sell books for a living. If I don’t sell the books I write, I won’t make any money, and that could negatively affect my children and husband.

I propose a compromise: think about the small business owners, including indie authors, craft businesses, local produce etc. They rely on income from the sales of the stock that they lovingly create by hand. We should support those businesses.  When I hear about #BlackFriday, my thoughts turn to Amazon. Well, they are made up of small business owners, like me, who rely on royalties paid via Amazon for the sales of our books.

Why not search for alternative Christmas gifts for your friends and family? Find them a book written and produced independently by a new author. Try a CD by a young musician. Or even search for some handcrafted bespoke trinkets, jewellery, furniture or bric-a-brac. The small business owners will be far more grateful for your custom and will make more effort to give you the personal customer service that makes you feel good about parting with your hard-earned cash. Thank you.

When a Witch Falls in Love

Have you ever met a vampire? I was never quite sure whether they existed, despite what my family said. My parents warned me never to get close to a vampire. They told me that it is dangerous for witches. Vampires would seek to seduce us and feed from our power as well as our blood, and we could not compromise our coven by allowing such an attack. But I always felt like my family didn’t quite understand vampires. They feared them, even though they told me we could defeat them. The more they tried to persuade me not to seek out vampires, the more I wanted to find one, to see for myself exactly how cold and calculating they could be. And then I met Meredith Hanson, in Blackpool of all places! I moved to a new hospital for work, and it was only a few months into my job that I met her. She was in my local pub one night, The Raven. I had made some friends there, and the pub landlord had decided he must watch over me on behalf of my coven. He was a powerful witch, and I knew immediately when the vampire entered his pub, because I felt his energy and I saw his reaction to her presence.

Meredith quite literally took my breath away. I had never been in love before, and I had no idea what these strange feelings were. My heart flipped, my pulse raced, I felt both hot and cold, and I had to speak to her. She tried to ignore me, and then she tried to frighten me away, but I was smitten. I felt like a giggling schoolgirl in her presence, especially when I sensed how old she was. Paul, the pub landlord, tried very hard to send her away, but she refused, because she was in the mood to play. Eventually she decided to go hunting, and I stupidly followed her outside. That first night she nearly drank my blood, but I was strong enough to stop her with my magic. And then she decided that I was interesting, when she recognised my strength as a witch. And our game began. I knew she was only playing, but I also knew I had to see her again. We began dating, but not in the traditional sense. We just seemed to bump into each other, and eventually she accepted that we needed to be together.

It wasn’t an easy start to a relationship, but then it never is when you deal with supernatural creatures. Our moods are far more extreme than humans, and of course we have magical abilities and additional strength to contend with. Meredith and I battled quite a lot in those early days, but that just made me want her more, and it made her even more hungry for me. Then she met the vampire hunter that had been sent to kill her, she put him in the hospital, and he ended up on my ward. I had to help her before he completed his job, but I didn’t want her to kill him either. I’m not a violent person, that’s why I trained as a nurse. But when a witch falls in love with a vampire, you must expect violence eventually. I helped Meredith to deal with the hunter, and we tried to continue our relationship. It was tough, and my coven certainly did not approve. They still hate her now, and they have pretty much excommunicated me. But I don’t care. As long as I am with her, I am happy. She is my lover, my other half, my best friend. And I am hers.

Writing Books and Being a Freelancer

I am rather excited this week to share news of my first professional article published in a national magazine: Writing Magazine, August edition, to be precise. I have subscribed to this magazine for many years; indeed they have provided links to publishing houses and websites where I have had work published. I featured in Writers’ News a couple of times with my books, but this time I had a real article accepted! It has given me the confidence to reignite my freelance career and keep on pitching, because recently I had been a little deflated when all I got was rejection or plain old avoidance. Here was an editor who liked what I wrote and published it. Hooray!

In other news, I am still plodding on with the book writing and promotion. Later this month you can see me in Blackpool with my novel Vampire of Blackpool, and my Redcliffe novels series. The first Books on the Beach event will take place at The Village Hotel in Blackpool on Saturday 20th July 2019. We will be joined by over 80 authors from across the globe. We are excited to bring so many names together under one roof and we would love it if you could join us! Check out our Facebook group for more details and to meet the authors who will attend.

Finding Time to Write

Last week I wrote about all the writing prompts I have jotted in old notebooks. When I dug those notebooks out of my drawer, I left two of them on the table where I sit down to work. I planned to use some of the notes during the week, but time somehow ran away from me. My work has gotten busy in other areas, and it means I spend most of my day running to and fro, and then I have to collect the children from school and help them with homework, activities and whatever else they need.

I still have a couple of mostly free days in which to work, and there are the evenings, but lately I find I’m too exhausted by time I get the children into bed. I used to sit up until the early hours working on my computer, but I simply cannot manage that these days. Still, I’m not worried. I have several books in progress, both fiction and non-fiction, but there is no urgency to complete them. They will be done when I am good and ready. And my notebooks will wait…

Writers Block Won’t Stop Me

I never believed in writers’ block, and I still don’t. What I do believe is that sometimes we just don’t feel the inspiration to write, unless we sit down and force ourselves to make a start. I have been procrastinating with a short story that I needed to write for an upcoming anthology. It only needed to be about 5000 words, and it needed a holiday romance theme, not too heavy on the sex, and certainly not violent. I really struggled!

I featured the vampire Meredith Hanson from Vampire of Blackpool, since the anthology is a showcase of authors that will attend Books on the Beach 2019, in Blackpool. She is a very old vampire, and she is in love with a witch. There is bound to be some kind of struggle, surely? Well, eventually I sat down with the intention of starting the story, and within a couple of days, I had a first draft. Now I need to read through and see if it makes sense. Wish me luck!

A Hard Lesson for an Author #nevergiveup

I think I need to face facts. For the past seven years I have been trying to promote and sell my Redcliffe novels series of adult paranormal romance novels set in Cornwall, England. These stories came about from an idea I nurtured as a teenager, but back then I wasn’t confident enough to write them down. Instead I left them to simmer in my subconscious while I read as many paranormal, supernatural and occult books as I could get my hands on. It opened up a whole new world, and indeed a new way of life, as I discovered paganism and modern witchcraft.

Naturally my research fed into my books as I wrote, and what began as one standalone novel, Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), turned into a series of six books. I am currently preparing to publish Book 5 in the series, and Book 6 is in early stages of being written. After that I will end it. And I have begun to realise that maybe the world isn’t ready for the Redcliffe novels yet. Sales have been extremely modest to the point of non-existent for some of my more recent books. It seems that people are keen to buy Love Hurts, but they either don’t read the book, or they don’t like it enough to want to read the rest in the series. That understanding does pain me, but I must shake it off and move on.

The Redcliffe novels series has been a passion project, and it has given me focus and self-confidence as I learned about being a new mother, nurturing babies, and supporting my family. The Redcliffe novels are a little bit of me, Catherine Green. They reflect my personality, my interests, my understanding of the world. Yes, I would love to see many more people read and appreciate my novels, but I cannot force them, much as I would love to. I don’t have enough money to invest in advertising campaigns, or spare cash to pay for PR, so my efforts remain small and humble. But it won’t always be this way. I am writing another series of novels featuring vampire hunters, and these do not feature romance. They are raw and violent. Perhaps the world will be more receptive to the idea of those novels? Time will tell.

NHS Nurses in my Novels #NHS70

Did you know that some of my novels feature NHS nurses and doctors as supporting characters? I mention this only because we are celebrating 70 years of the National Health Service, and I thought you might be interested…

In the Redcliffe Novels series, we meet NHS nurse Sally Frost who leads a double life as lieutenant and law enforcer for the Redcliffe werewolf pack. She is helplessly in love with her alpha wolf, but he won’t commit, so she settles for the unofficial role of alpha female as they battle to keep the enemy out and their wolves safe… but sometimes their own wolves can cause trouble, as we discover when Sally has a run-in with her professional colleague from the hospital, Dr Kimberley Wayne. Download your FREE copy of It’s Complicated to see what happens.

In Vampire of Blackpool you can read what happens when an ancient female vampire meets a young witch who works as an NHS nurse. They fall into an unexpected romance with deadly consequences, made worse by the appearance of a vampire hunter. You will find references to the NHS in most of my novels, actually, since my hunters, humans and creatures usually end up in the hospital at some point during their adventures. Happy Birthday, NHS!

My novels are adult paranormal with equal amounts of dark romance and contemporary English Gothic. Sign up now for special offers, book release news, and your FREE Redcliffe story to get started.

#PromotionWithPride Proudly Presents: Vampire of Blackpool! #LGBT

This month I am participating in #PrideMonth and showcasing my books that feature LGBTQ characters. While my genre is adult paranormal and contemporary English Gothic, my characters are an assortment of flavours, and you never know what you might find when you delve in… gay and bisexual werewolves in the Redcliffe novels, for example!

This week I was featured on NN Light’s Book Heaven with my contemporary English Gothic novel Vampire of Blackpool. A female vampire falls in love with a witch, and they must think fast when a male hunter arrives in town, determined to seek out the vampire and remove her from existence. It’s a classic tale of cat and mouse with a Gothic twist and a whole lot of passion and lust. Check it out over on the blog.

Celebrate #PrideMonth at NN Light’s Book Heaven @NNP_W_Light

Did you know that most of my novels and short stories feature LGBTQ+ characters? I don’t set out to include them, or to write specifically about the characters in their unique perspectives. They simply have natural preferences to same sex or whatever feels natural. And to that end, I am participating in Promotion with Pride at N.N. Light’s Book Heaven.

You might like to read about my gay and bisexual werewolves in the Redcliffe novels series. Or my lesbian vampires in Vampire of Blackpool and Return of the Vampire Hunter. I am currently working on a couple of gay vampire novels set in Manchester, and I will also soon offer up something very different and much darker than my usual writing style… But that is top secret and you must wait until I am allowed to reveal more!

Don’t forget to find me on social media:

Not Just a Pretty Face #VoB #vampire #hunter

This year I intend to finish writing my Redcliffe novels series and turn my attention to the vampire hunter novels that have been lurking on my hard-drive for a couple of years. These novels are pure urban fantasy with some contemporary English Gothic thrown in for good measure. They are violent, erotic, passionate and not for those of a nervous disposition. Dare you read them?

You might like to start with my debut Urban Fantasy novel, Vampire of Blackpool. The vampire, the witch and the hunter battle it out in a contemporary Gothic adventure in Northern England. Who wins the battle? I think we know the answer to that one, but you might be surprised… Boo!

Have I Outgrown #NaNoWriMo?

We have passed the halfway point for #NaNoWriMo 2017, and I have to say I am really not engaging with it. My novel has not yet reached 20,000 words, I find lots of distractions keeping me away from my manuscript, and I simply cannot be bothered with it this year. I wrote about it yesterday on my SpookyMrsGreen blog, and one of the comments gave me food for thought: have I outgrown NaNoWriMo?

I already know the answer to that question: yes! You see, I don’t need the monthly wordcount challenge to force me to write my books. Since I first joined NaNoWriMo back in 2011, I have written about a dozen novels that are in various stages of editing. I have published half a dozen novels and short stories, along with hundreds of blog posts on various platforms. I don’t need NaNoWriMo anymore, and I feel a little bit sad. But mostly I feel relieved. I will still write my novel, of course. It has been requested by my loyal fans, and I cannot disappoint them. But I will do it in my own time, when I feel ready. Enjoy your month, my friends! Do share your thoughts about NaNoWriMo in the comments below.

Vampire of Blackpool Paperback Edition #NaNoWriMo #ASMSG

Have you read Vampire of Blackpool yet? If you are not familiar with my favourite Victorian seaside resort in the North of England, this book might open your eyes a little bit… and now I am proud to announce that the paperback edition is ready to order! It took me a while since this project has been very much a “learn as you go” adventure. I am happy enough with the outcome, and I have learned my lessons for future self-publishing plans.

For #NaNoWriMo this year I am writing a sequel to Vampire of Blackpool. It wasn’t my intention when I wrote the book, but several readers have informed me that they are waiting to see what happens next. I cannot disappoint them, now, can I? Admittedly I am off to a slow start because my mind is currently elsewhere, but I aim to knuckle down, get writing, and catch up as soon as I can. The sequel will be written! For now, you may enjoy Vampire of Blackpool in paperback or eBook editions.

Happy Halloween! Are You Ready for #NaNoWriMo?

Boo! Scared you!

Ha ha, yes we are celebrating my favourite time of year, Halloween, or Samhain as I prefer to call the festival. See my pagan housewife blog for more about that.

Today I am hosting a Halloween party for my daughters and their friends, so we have decorated the house, stocked up on treats, planned the games and got our fancy dress ready. At the weekend we attended a big family party in our town and it was lots of fun as always.

Halloween heralds the arrival of another annual event that has become a staple in my life: #NaNoWriMo. Are you participating this year? Shall we be writing buddies? Look me up if you like, my NaNo name is SpookyMrsGreen. I haven’t really planned for the event this year since I’ve been busy with domestic challenges. I was going to use this NaNoWriMo as the opportunity to write book 6 in my Redcliffe Novels series, but I got a bit overexcited and already started writing that at the beginning of October. Instead I have decided to start a brand new novel, the sequel to Vampire of Blackpool. I have no idea where it is going or what will happen. I am a true pantser. Here’s to #NaNoWriMo 2017!

Inspired by a Family Day Trip

Writers find inspiration in the strangest of places, and for me it happens all the time. I recently took my husband and children to our local Legoland Discovery Centre to participate in the Lego brick building challenge. That was for my SpookyMrsGreen blog. We had lots of fun that day, and I took the opportunity to watch our fellow Lego enthusiasts as they enjoyed the discovery centre.

At one point I sat at a table sipping my coffee, and my husband was distracted by his phone. Our children had run away to play in one of the Lego play areas, so I looked all around at the building. It is basically a big warehouse filled with Lego themed equipment and rides. I watched the staff members hurrying to and fro, speaking into their walkie talkies, giving out orders, dashing from one job to the next, and I wondered what they do when the discovery centre closes for the day. What are their homes like? Do they have partners, children, families waiting for them? Are they completely human? How could I incorporate this domestic setting into my vampire and werewolf stories? Watch this space…

When a Vampire Falls in Love #LGBT #LesFic

“You should know better, Samantha,” he said, “Witches do not mix with vampires. It always end badly. Get out while you can.”

The vampire, the witch, and the hunter battle it out in a contemporary Gothic adventure in Northern England.

Meredith Hanson lives in Blackpool, the former Victorian holiday hotspot of Northern England. She masquerades as a reclusive author, feeding on the blood of unsuspecting tourists without remorse. Her life takes on new meaning when she meets a young witch in a local pub one evening. Despite Meredith’s cold demeanour, she finds herself oddly fascinated with Samantha Morris, and falls into an accidental relationship with the girl. It is at this time that a vampire hunter arrives in Blackpool. He is tough, he is determined, and his next target is an ancient vampire that has been spotted in the tourist town. He intends to bring her down and destroy her to save the lives of innocent humans.

Will he succeed? Or will the experienced vampire seductress be the cause of his undoing?

You can buy Vampire of Blackpool in various eBook formats here, and from Amazon.
