Those who Forget the Past…

Did you know I once published a historical novel? It’s about vampires and is set in Victorian England. It tells the story of how playboy millionaire Marcus Scott came to be a vampire when he worked as a stable boy for Lord Gregory Stockton. You may have met Marcus in the Redcliffe novels series…

Well, during May I am offering free copies of that novel, The Darkness of Love, for you to sample. You can also choose from a variety of other historical novels in all sub-genres. Stock up your holiday reading list now and discover some new historical authors.

NHS Nurse Werewolf Lieutenant?! #TheRedcliffeNovels

Have you read It’s Complicated yet? This cheeky short story comes from the perspective of NHS nurse Sally Frost as she navigates her busy life in Redcliffe, Cornwall. By day (or night) she is a dedicated NHS hospital nurse, and when she’s not in her day job, she works as pack lieutenant for the Redcliffe werewolves. And she is in love with the alpha, Danny Mason, naturally, but he cannot commit to one person. There is another lieutenant, Simon Bunce, and while he and Sally are good friends, she knows that Danny will always choose Simon over her when it comes to love, and other activities…

#TheRedcliffeNovels series starts out fairly tame as the innocent human Jessica Stone falls in love with Jack Mason. But when she discovers his secrets, and the truth about his identical twin brother, she unleashes a few surprises of her own. Look out for book 6 arriving later in 2019.

Finding Time to Write

Last week I wrote about all the writing prompts I have jotted in old notebooks. When I dug those notebooks out of my drawer, I left two of them on the table where I sit down to work. I planned to use some of the notes during the week, but time somehow ran away from me. My work has gotten busy in other areas, and it means I spend most of my day running to and fro, and then I have to collect the children from school and help them with homework, activities and whatever else they need.

I still have a couple of mostly free days in which to work, and there are the evenings, but lately I find I’m too exhausted by time I get the children into bed. I used to sit up until the early hours working on my computer, but I simply cannot manage that these days. Still, I’m not worried. I have several books in progress, both fiction and non-fiction, but there is no urgency to complete them. They will be done when I am good and ready. And my notebooks will wait…

What Shall I Write Today?

I am late posting on the blog this week, and there are a few reasons for it. The main one is that I simply didn’t know what to write. I could very easily try and promote one of my novels or my Redcliffe series, but I’m bored of that. This is my space to be creative, and truthfully, I have lots of ideas for writing. I just need to sit down and get started, rather than distract myself with other duties. So that is what I’m doing today, in between those other duties.

Just as I was trying to decide on a subject for today’s blog post, I opened a drawer and found a couple of very old notebooks. Indeed, I had forgotten about one of them, and the other I had been searching for and couldn’t locate. It was in the same drawer I had already searched, but hidden underneath another notebook, and this one is very battered and well worn. But it is full of ideas. I had this notebook before my children were born, and I would jot down little snippets of writing inspiration to be used in the future. Well, now it’s the future, so maybe I should use them!

Here is a note that confused me: A view over Cardiff from a modern hotel window or the roof of a tall, historic building. It is early morning just before dawn, and the city is quiet, with electric lights reflecting off the river. It is romantic at this time, before the start of a busy working day in the human world. Now, I haven’t visited Cardiff before, but I have visited lots of beautiful places in Wales, and maybe this inspiration came from Manchester and I just changed the city. Who knows? But it is there, and perhaps I will incorporate it into a novel. There are hints of it in my upcoming novel Hunting the Hunted (currently with agents). I wonder what other gems I will find in this battered old notebook? The possibilities are endless!

Crisis of Confidence

Demons have crept into my mind during the past few months, whispering that I should give up on my dreams.

“Nobody likes your books,” they taunt, “No-one is buying them. Just give up. Move on. Find a regular job.”

I almost began to listen to them. My subscribers were disappearing, my book sales flatlined, and no matter where I look, I cannot find a way in to the places where I might find help. I’m just one person. I cannot do this alone. I have to be writer, proofreader, editor, publisher, promoter, networker, business planner, and above all else, Mother. All I want to do is write, and have people appreciate and enjoy my books. Is that too much to ask?

As I was about to give up all hope, finish writing book 6 in #TheRedcliffeNovels series, and then call it quits on my career, something compelled me to check my sales pages online. Amazon Author Central showed me that I had a new 5* review just last month for my first novel, Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel). A new reader discovered my work and enjoyed it enough to leave a positive review. Hopefully she will enjoy the rest of my published novels as well.

And, just like that, all hope was restored. Being an Indie author is a hard slog. There is no get rich quick scheme. If you have business experience and can operate yourself appropriately, then you might make it work. I do not have that. All I have is the skill for creative writing. Everything else I must learn as I go along, or else find people that are willing to help teach and support me. But for now, I have silenced the demons. I will never stop writing. And my dreams will never die.

#TheRedcliffeNovels – Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel) Book 1

Set in the fictional seaside town of Redcliffe in Cornwall, Love Hurts is about a young woman who runs a bookshop with her best friend. She falls in love with a local police detective and later discovers that he is a vampire, and that his identical twin brother is a werewolf. She is dragged into their complicated and dangerous lives, to her detriment, where secrets are told and lives are lost...

What vampire book genre is the book?
My novel is a contemporary paranormal romance

What are the ‘themes’ of this book?
There is adult content, sexually explicit scenes and scenes of violence

What is the setting of your book series or book?
The Redcliffe Novels series is set in the fictional seaside town of Redcliffe in Cornwall, England.

What’s in store for readers?
This is the story of my heroine Jessica Stone as she struggles with being in love with a vampire, while having sexual feelings towards his identical twin brother who is a werewolf. To further complicate things, Jessica discovers she is a witch, and since she was orphaned at a young age, she had no family to guide her into her heritage. Things kick off with the aid of her newly discovered non-human friends, and her easy life spirals out of control.

Words from the Author

I have always been fascinated by the vampire myth and wrote my dissertation on vampires for my university degree. Contrary to popular folklore, I have always viewed vampires as a romantic and misunderstood creature, although I do not doubt their ability to kill and destroy. To me they represent the primitive, dangerous part of ourselves that humans prefer to ignore.

Castles and Caves for Inspiration

While I am busy editing a manuscript for a vampire hunter novel, my mind is beginning to wander away to new territory. I haven’t written any new stories for a couple of months, and now I’m feeling restless. I do have a few unfinished manuscripts that I should probably attend to, but surely, I can allow time for another project in the meantime?

Anyway, I found a little inspiration at the caves I saw when I visited Beeston Castle in Cheshire. As an English Heritage member, I have visited this castle a few times during the past couple of years, but up to now I had not seen the caves. I think my children had been difficult or unwilling to walk that far, although as it turns out, the caves are not too far from the main entrance to the castle grounds. We couldn’t actually go inside the caves as they are fenced off, but I pressed my face to the iron bars and let my imagination wander… would we find a vampire lurking in the darkness, or a pack of hungry werewolves? Or maybe something more sinister still… Let’s see what happens when I start to write a new story.

Magic, Monsters and Mercs Giveaway

Come one come all, it's time for some high fantasy. Give us your dungeons, your dragons, and your dastardly villains!

Look out! Damian shouted as something appeared behind me.
I leaped round just as a female fist slammed into me. Falling back onto the grass for a second time, I saw Damian fighting with another vampire. It was Elaine. Snarling, snapping, she punched him and flung him across the cemetery.
            Damian! I shouted.
Then she turned her attention on me. I was sitting on the ground, stunned. She was just as beautiful as I remembered. And just as deadly.
Hello, Hannah, she purred, After all these years, you still take my breath away.
            I swallowed nervously.

            You dont breathe, I said.
She laughed, and the sound sent shivers down my spine. I tried to stand up, but my legs refused to work. Elaine offered a hand. I stared at it. The skin was white in the glow from the moon and the backdrop of streetlights. I was alone, in a graveyard, with an old, powerful vampire. This was a very bad situation.

The Truth about being a Freelance Writer

I have reached a point where I am about ready to give up my dreams of making a living from my books and my writing. For the past five years or so, I have tried all sorts of strategies to try and break into the “professional” arena. But just last week I learned a valuable lesson: there is no right or wrong way to do it. When it comes to earning money from your writing, you simply need to have contact with the right people in the right places, at the right time. For example, I could submit a manuscript to a literary agent, but depending on if and when they find time to look at it, I probably won’t make an impression.

The key lesson, I realised, is that we should never give up. I only submit manuscripts once or twice a year to agents and publishers, unless I am paying a publisher for their services. I have probably submitted even less pitches for freelance writing work if I take an average. Mostly it is because the publications I want to write for rarely share their contact details in public places. And the smaller publications that I approach usually tell me they can’t (or won’t) pay for my work, but they are happy to publish an article for free. Well, I am done with that. I publish free articles on my SpookyMrsGreen blog three times a week, and I have submitted more work than I care to remember to professional organisations. It is time for some payback in the form of cold, hard cash. I am still searching for that lucrative contract, but I need to give myself a kick up the backside, stop being complacent, and get on with it. Let’s see how we get on…

When Life Gets in the Way

It’s a bloody good job I didn’t set any New Year’s resolutions! So far, I have been so busy with domestic chores, mothering and being the supportive wife, that I have barely even switched my laptop on for more than an hour at a time. I did manage to apply for a few writing-related jobs, so all is not lost, but today I am feeling rather fed-up and frustrated. My blog stats are slipping because I have been absent from social media, my books won’t sell because nobody knows about them, and I haven’t been able to prepare a manuscript for submission to agents. There is always so much to do!

Tomorrow is a new day, however, and for an added bonus it is my birthday. Since I just ran myself ragged preparing and hosting a birthday party for my daughter at the weekend, I am taking some time off while the children are at school, and I am going out for lunch. At least being my own boss, I can take a day off when I need to – but I can’t stop being Mummy and Wife. It’s a good job I love them!

Books Won’t Die!

The publishing industry has undergone massive change during the past decade or so. It seems that nowadays almost everybody can self-publish a book, and most people have done (hello!). Ultimately, we still strive for that elusive contract with a big publisher and all the trimmings, even though the reality is often far from the dream. However you publish your books, one thing is certain: books are immortal. Readers will always crave something new and will devour series after series in the quest for adventure and knowledge.

When the Kindle was launched, and a whole range of e-readers appeared on the market, industry experts claimed that the good old paperback was dead. How wrong they were! I heard on the radio earlier this week that independent booksellers reported a boom in book sales during the Christmas 2018 period, a surprise result considering that high street stores are failing to meet targets and are closing at a rapid rate. I wonder if readers still like the feel and smell of a book? I know I do. I mean, yes, I love my Kindle, but truthfully, I read more physical books than eBooks. My Kindle is a useful, portable device that can fit in my handbag, but nothing beats a book. And I still love hardback books. Indeed, I dream of having my own novels published in hardback one day, if only to fulfill a long-held desire.

Do you still read? What is your preferred medium for a book? I’m still seeking an audience for #TheRedcliffeNovels series, and I am working on my new vampire hunter series of standalone novels. You can find the first two already published: Vampire of Blackpool and Return of the Vampire Hunter. I also write and publish short stories and the occasional poem. But I love books. I always will.

New Year, New Book Submissions

Hello, my friends, how are you? Back to work and back in the old routine now? Or did you engineer a major life change for 2019, and you have changed jobs or retired or embarked upon a new adventure? Do share! I have decided to start 2019 without any formal New Year’s Resolutions. In previous years this is the day when I would sit at my computer, scribble notes in my diary, and attempt to plan a rigid structure for writing new books, updating my blogs, finding freelance work and building my brand. Inevitably I would be distracted by domestic challenges, supporting friends and family members, and my own spiritual development. And I didn’t create the magical, easy career as a writer that I dreamed about.

Now I have seen the light, as it were. I know how the industry works. I have done a lot of research, tried and failed a lot of systems and projects, and learned a lot about my place in the book world. Shortly before Christmas I watched a documentary on Sky Arts featuring the food critic Giles Coren, and his journey as a failed author (his words). I learned that he was paid a very generous advance of £30k to publish a literary novel about ten years ago, and it didn’t sell. Or at least, it didn’t sell enough copies to make him a success by industry standards. With his established career as a journalist and his privilege to know the right people in the right places, he would have expected more, and he admitted that. I enjoyed watching the documentary.

You would think that I came away feeling deflated and defeated. I am most definitely a failed author by those standards. Nobody has ever paid me an advance for a novel, I have never been offered a book contract by a publisher, and I don’t have an agent. Everything has been done independently, on a very low (non-existent) budget, with very little emotional support from people around me. And I am proud of what I have achieved. Ok, nobody knows about my books. Most people don’t know that I have 5 published books in the Redcliffe novels series, or that I have published 3 standalone novels, half a dozen short stories, and have run two blogs for almost ten years. None of that matters, because I am a failed author. Well, guess what? I refuse to back down, and I refuse to give up. There are more novels waiting to be published, and quite a few prestigious agents are open for submissions this year. I will try again. We will not back down!

Yule Blessings, my friends! I am feeling very festive this week and looking forward to Christmas Day and some time with family. Did you read my festive horror story, Christmas with the Vampires?

I published it shortly after The Darkness of Love, because bad-boy vampire Marcus Scott insisted that I write another story for him. Since I was busy with babies at that time, I compromised and wrote him a short festive story. Tell me what you think…

Writers Block Won’t Stop Me

I never believed in writers’ block, and I still don’t. What I do believe is that sometimes we just don’t feel the inspiration to write, unless we sit down and force ourselves to make a start. I have been procrastinating with a short story that I needed to write for an upcoming anthology. It only needed to be about 5000 words, and it needed a holiday romance theme, not too heavy on the sex, and certainly not violent. I really struggled!

I featured the vampire Meredith Hanson from Vampire of Blackpool, since the anthology is a showcase of authors that will attend Books on the Beach 2019, in Blackpool. She is a very old vampire, and she is in love with a witch. There is bound to be some kind of struggle, surely? Well, eventually I sat down with the intention of starting the story, and within a couple of days, I had a first draft. Now I need to read through and see if it makes sense. Wish me luck!

Why I Didn’t do #NaNoWriMo

This year I consciously avoided participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). It has been something of an obsession for about the past five years. I eagerly awaited November so that I could achieve my 50,000-word target, print out my certificate, and order the t-shirt. It worked well for me, because it helped me to write the first draft of several novels, some of which I have now published. You can read my last NaNoWriMo novel, Heart of the Vampire (A Redcliffe Novel) Book 5 to see an example.

At some point I realised that I no longer needed NaNoWriMo. I have a collection of draft novels awaiting my attention, and I am so busy with freelance work and family life that I really couldn’t fit in the challenge this year. I didn’t want to. If I really needed to take part, I would make the time possible, like I did in previous years. But it simply lost its appeal. I loved the time I spent working on NaNoWriMo projects, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a starting point, some inspiration and motivation, and the online support groups that come with it. But I am moving on. Farewell, NaNoWriMo. We had a good run together.
